Save soil with the lasagna / hugelkultur methodFor beds 12 inches or taller, you can fill the bottom third with branches, logs, cardboard, or straw. This reduces the amount of soil needed by up to 30%, improves drainage, and adds slow-release nutrients as the organic matter decomposes. Fill only the top 8–10 inches with quality soil or raised bed mix.
About raised bed mix (60/30/10)Raised bed mix is typically 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% perlite or coarse vermiculite. This blend provides excellent drainage, nutrient retention, and root aeration. You can also make your own by purchasing the components separately, which may be cheaper for larger quantities.
This is an estimate only. Actual soil volumes can vary based on settling and compaction — most soils settle 10–15% after watering. Bag sizes and prices vary by brand and retailer. Always confirm pricing with your local supplier.
